History

At St. Peter’s it is our aim to instil a love of History in all our children. By exploring historical figures, periods and key events, children develop processes of enquiry such as chronology, significance, change and continuity, cause, consequence and interpretation.

The progression and sequence of the curriculum is planned carefully, starting in EYFS with History in children’s own living memory. This progression ensures a good understanding of key concepts such as settlements, travel & exploration, conflict  and culture and pastimes. These concepts are revisited regularly throughout both Key Stages. This enables our children to have a deep understanding of key historical concepts, and the ability to make links between different periods of history.

Our focus on children knowing more and remembering more during both Key Stages 1 and 2 is supported by substantive learning. Substantive learning includes topic knowledge, chronological knowledge and knowledge of substantive concepts. The children gain both knowledge of the past and the ability to make key links. They not only have an understanding of what came before and what came after the areas studied, but also the impact that period or person had on other areas of history.

During Key Stage 2 we focus on disciplinary learning. This gives children the opportunity to focus on how historians find out about the past and how they shape their arguments.
