Art and Design

Art and Design at St. Peter’s Primary School and Nursery is an expression of individuality. We believe it stimulates and fires imagination while being a fundamental means of personal expression. Children are able to build on their own experiences and express their own artistic flair, using a variety of media and tools to develop new and existing skills. Through the teaching of our innovative curriculum based upon Chris Quigley’s Art and Design programme, children learn about the diverse roles and purposes of art, craft and design in contemporary life, different times and cultures and the wider world.

Our curriculum provides visual, tactile and sensory experience, with a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern, different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. They discover ideas and meanings in the work of artists and designers.

While Art is essentially a practical subject, our art curriculum also provides opportunities for reflection; children acquire the ability to be informed, critical responses of their own work and that of others and are encouraged to develop both their ability to respond critically to works of art, and develop their confidence in their own artistic ability.
